New Year's Resolutions, How did you do this year?

January  is the time for New Beginnings.  We set new goals, we write them down, we make vision boards all in hopes of being more organized and achieving our dreams.

Let's try something before you get to your 2016 resolutions.  Look back at your goals for 2015 and pick the top 5.  How did you do?  Did you achieve all of them?  Think about the ones you met, and the ones you didn't.  What made the difference?  Did you set realistic, measurable goals?

Think about these things while getting ready for 2016.  If you would like some help narrowing down your goals, contact me at betti@betticoffeypresents.com.  I would be happy to help.

Energize Without Disruptions for Improved Productivity!

If you count the number of disruptions and distractions you have in a single day… it’s overwhelming!  With emails, texts, endless pings, rings and vibrations…the concept of being able to just sit down and focus exclusively on one task is an inconceivable luxury!

We tell ourselves we need to stay connected in order to be productive and efficient. And were proud of our abilities to multi-task… but we need to swap multi-tasking for mindfulness!  By taking intentional periods away from technology and being able to focus in an absorbed way on a task were doing…we actually connect with our work, with each other and with high-quality, creative thinking!

You don’t have to go totally “off the grid”!  Just start building in small “notification-free” periods!  Start with 10 minutes then, as needed stretch the time that you’ll be laser focused.  You’ll be surprised with the quantity and quality of work you’ll complete! Your productivity will increase, communications will be more effective and you’ll feel more satisfied at the end of the day!

Think about these ideas:

Embrace the “Do Not Disturb” philosophy!  Turn off the notifications on your smartphones and computers for a time to realize improved productivity and really get things done!  Allow yourself to focus uninterrupted!

Communicate your plan to others.  Let your teams know what you’re doing to achieve better productivity!  When they see the results, they’ll adapt this time management skill for improved productivity and effectiveness to attain their own results!

Set goals for these focused sprints!  Decide on a couple of tasks you want to accomplish beforehand.  This will ensure that you’ll stay focused on your most important work without wasting time prioritizing!

And…Remember to establish these ideas in your personal arenas!  They work!

One of the most successful HorsePower Programs this year has been “Fueling Sustainable Productivity with HorsePower’s Energy Elements”!  Give me a call and let’s talk about utilizing the four Energy Elements in both your personal and professional arenas!

Take care and remember to …

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and others.

Being able to accurately understand and perceive a person's thoughts and emotions, even before exchanging words, through understanding nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions enables you to manage a relationship with success. Having the ability to reason, understand and manage yours and others emotions are strong components in relationship management and emotional intelligence!

People with a high emotional intelligence will perform better and achieve more! They can recognize and respond better to emotions and motivation using both their intellectual and emotional sides. You can improve your skills and abilities in emotional intelligence to better interact with others, be more self- confident, motivated and empathetic!

When you REALLY LISTEN you develop greater interpersonal effectiveness and understanding… and you achieve higher levels of performance in yourself and others! Because you have observed and listened to others – you will understand them better – and you will be better able to manage situations and achieve success. Listen and understand first – bring out the best in people – and turn problems into phenomenal opportunities – utilizing your social and emotional intelligence!

This is a fun, interactive component of Communicating with HorsePower! Learn how to sharpen your social skills and build positive and strong relationships in every area of your life!

Motivation is Everywhere!

Where do you get your motivation?  Do you listen to music?  Read books?  Meditate?

Most people don't think of watching movies as a way to get motivated.  Movies can be so inspiring!  I wanted to share a few quotes with you from some of my favorites!

The next time you take the time to watch a movie, pay attention!  You might find some motivation tucked into the dialogue!

Rudeness and Bad Manners Knocks Out Success

Did you know that the cost of bad behavior can impact your company’s success and cost millions of dollars!
It will have a disastrous effect on your bottom line and your credibility with clients!
So does politeness pay?  You bet!

Think about your workplace and what goes on every day. Taking credit for others’ work, texting in meetings, spreading rumors and gossip, ignoring e-mails and not saying “thank you” are not only annoying – they cause stress, lost productivity, poor performance and negative employee engagement!  Studies have shown that eight out of ten employees are victims of insults or bullying…and that can cost a company millions! Performance slips, people lose interest and commitment… then find jobs elsewhere.  And, if a client sees incivility among a staff, there’s a 50% probability that they will not patronize that business again!

“Motivating the Unmotivated...with HorsePower!”

Mo-ti-va-tion

The driving force by which humans achieve their goals

I remember at a corporate meeting a few years back when the speaker said:
“A manager is not responsible for motivating the team…he can lead them…but a person’s motivation comes from within.”  I’ll let that sink in…..
Then think about the statement: “Motivation is a choice, not a symptom.”  So true.

Lately my audiences have been the managers of lots of young people – millennials – and the topic always comes up that their difficult to motivate and keep happy. Yep…it is true that these talented young people are wired differently and keeping them vibrant and enthusiastic is a special skill.  However, that frustrated manager has the opportunity to instill a very important lesson for their young professionals to learn for their careers and their personal lives … “Motivation is a choice, not a consequence.”

Everyone gets disappointed with something at work.  A new graduate might feel that they're not growing or learning from the job - that it’s taking too long to move up.  A middle manager might be fed up being “the cheese” between a demanding boss and team.  A senior manager might be frustrated with the lack of growth, results and overall resistance to change. An entrepreneur might be frustrated with their growth and demands from investors.  Maybe you dislike someone in the office or can’t stand your annoying boss. The scenarios can go on and on…

The important lesson is that becoming unmotivated because of whatever is frustrating you is a mistake!
Motivation is a choice, not a consequence…you have a choice!

·      You can start taking control of your personal motivation by leaning into your work.  Be a positive contributor and team player who solves  issues!
·      When you get your hands dirty you learn more and that’s motivating!
·      If your contribution has solved a big problem the doors open for advancement!
·      Never, Ever burn bridges!  People you’ve worked with will remember you.  They might even become your clients!
·      Take charge of your future and career – don’t wait for someone else to give you a break!

Remember… You can’t light someone else’s fire… but you can create the conditions for that fire to burn brightly…with HorsePower!

Achievement with Purpose, Power and Passion

What's your definition of achievement, success and winning? What's the difference? What's important to you? What's your plan to achieve success? And, what's horsepower got to do with realizing personal and professional achievement and success?

Live the moment!
The more present we are, the more aware we will be in real time, making us more sensitive and responsive in our lives. "Feel the rhythm, the action, be aware, make adjustments…and ride every stride"!

Love the moment!

Enjoy and focus on what you're doing. Learn to be patient and put in the time, dedication and intensity to make it worthwhile. Make haste slowly!

Relinquish the past!
"Don't look back". Looking back is detrimental. It throws you off balance, breaks concentration, creates doubts…and steals time from the future!

Visualize you're dreams!

An inspiring catalyst to live proactively. If you do what you enjoy, you're going to do it well! Add passion and persistence as your "Success with HorsePower" wheel drives towards your future goals.

Move into your future!

Communication Differences between Men and Women in the Workplace!

Recently I gave a two hour keynote presentation on “Communication Differences between Men and Women in the Workplace”!  The audience loved it and have already started applying some of the techniques - improve listening - understanding each other - appreciate the others diversity - and utilize the different strengths in a team to realize success!

This was a very interesting, fun and enlightening time with the audience!
Here are just a few of the highlights we discussed...

The most frequently expressed complaint women have about men is that they don’t listen.
The most expressed complaint men have about women is that they talk too much and want to change them!

There is no “best” communication style for all workplace interactions.  Women have the edge in collaborative environments and men seem to take charge more readily!

To a woman, good listening skills include making eye contact and reacting visually to the speaker.  To a man, listening takes place with a minimum of eye contact and almost no verbal feedback!

Newsletter - “Emerging Leadership Success … with HorsePower!” Recruiting

Great leaders, no matter how good they are, know that real success comes from having the right people on their team.  Your employees are a direct reflection of you.

Steve Jobs once said  "Assume you’re by yourself in a start-up and you want a partner. You’d take a lot of time finding the partner, right? He would be half of your company. Why should you take any less time finding a third of your company or a fourth of your company or a fifth of your company? When you’re in a start-up, the first ten people will determine whether the company succeeds or not. Each is 10% of the company. So why wouldn’t you take as much time as necessary to find all the A-players? If three were not so great, why would you want a company where 30% of your people are not so great? A small company depends on great people much more than a big company does."

Another important tip about hiring the right people from Lee Iacocca is "I hire people brighter than me and then I get out of their way."

Managers, once you get the right team in place, make sure you delegate and impower them to do what you hired them for.  Lead them with HorsePower!

Emerging Leadership: Reliability, Loyalty, and Respect

Managers and leaders want reliable, loyal, and respectful employees in order to have a productive team.  You have to exhibit the qualities you want.  You must be the example.

People you lead want to know that you can be relied on. They need to feel that you are honest, authentic and trustworthy.  They need to know that you’re a person of integrity…and that you’ve got their backs!  Never let the team down and show accountability!

Your employees want to feel respected, as do you.  If you want respect as a leader, start respecting those that you lead. Earning respect of others takes time and commitment, but it’s worth it!

True leaders know that success is not something that is achieved overnight.  You use HorsePower!   HorsePower is focus, consistency, sustained effort and steadiness that done over a period of time produces results!
